He was replacing the massive billboard advertisements, including one for the Pope\u2026&#8230;.does he really need advertising?<\/p>\n<p>As we puzzled over the ticket machine at Boadilla a train came in and left without us.\u00a0 We were stumped with the machine, but a young Johnny Depp lookalike was also having problems and he stepped forward to help us.\u00a0 With the help of the large yellow button, Mr Depp\u2019s Spanish, and also his near perfect English, we all ended up with a ticket and boarded the next train to Colonia Jardin.\u00a0 We thought it would only be a short stroll to the palace from there, but \u2018Johnny Depp\u2019 explained that we were still at least an hour\u2019s walk from Madrid.\u00a0 He suggested we buy another ticket to get us to the main station at Principe Pio and then transfer to an underground route through to Opera and he also helped us on which ticket would be best to buy.\u00a0 He was so helpful and absolutely correct with all of his suggestions, we were very glad to have met him. \u00a0We decided that Spaniards were helpful people, but as it turned out he is a chef and comes from Columbia!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2862\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor.jpg\" alt=\"King Philip III and Laura in Plaza Mayor\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor-600x375.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01747-King-Philip-III-and-Laura-in-Plaza-Mayor-96x60.jpg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Philip III and Laura in Plaza Mayor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After two hours of travelling we were finally in the centre of Madrid and we wandered through to the Plaza Mayor clutching our maps and trying to orientate ourselves.\u00a0 Using our handy Michelin guide, we followed one of the tours which seemed to almost go around in circles at one point, but we enjoyed roaming the streets and getting a feel for the city.\u00a0 The sights in the San Miguel market were fascinating; which did turn out to be a good decision.<\/p>\n<p>We caught another metro across to the east side of the city to Banco de Espa\u00f1a and then promenaded through a small part of the enormous Parque de El Retiro.
