The lovely \u2018ageing hippie\u2019 on reception, when I asked for directions, suddenly climbed through the window rather than through a door and insisted on helping me!\u00a0 First surprise of the day\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>As we ate our breakfast the clouds and mist lifted from the Eiger, the Fiescherh\u00f6rner and the Wetterhorn mountain tops. Then as Rodney enjoyed his third cup of tea, all of the waterfalls appeared.\u00a0 After clearing up and hanging out the wet washing we wandered up to the base of the Luftseilbahn for a trip in the gondola up to the Pfingstegg at 1,391m.\u00a0 From there we zig zagged the narrow trail, uphill almost all the way, though there was a tiny bit of flat and a couple of downhills, but not much.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-863\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-863\" title=\"P1080010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010-96x64.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080010.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hiking up from Pfingstegg to Berghaus Barigg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were often sheer drops down to the river in some spots and when we walked above the tree line, the meadows around us were full of flowers and a mixture of grasses.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember ever seeing such an enormous mixture of lovely flowers growing in the wild.\u00a0 I wish I could have identified them all, some I know, but can\u2019t remember their names, others we had never seen before. There were large and small white daisies, bright yellow buttercups, or globeflowers, purple, pink and cream clover, dandelions in yellow and orange, forget-me-nots, pink achillea, gentian, alpine violets, harebells in a lovely soft blue, something that looked like daphne, and some tiny four-pointed white star flowers, plus so many more that I can\u2019t even remember.\u00a0 We never saw any edelweiss, but I think it may be a spring flower and we would have missed them, so I sang the song instead.\u00a0 I wanted to gather up armfuls of the flowers, but at the same time couldn\u2019t bear to spoil the scenery by picking even one of them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-864\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amongst the flowers on the Pfingstegg to Berghaus Barigg walk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The views, all the way up and down, are absolutely stunning.\u00a0 It took us nearly two hours to get up to the Berghaus Barigg where we tucked in to a smoked sausage and herb soup lunch.\u00a0 The deck where we sat looked out over the huge Unter Grindelwald Gletscher (glacier) and all the surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-865\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the deck at Berghaus Barigg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We have done a lot of wonderful walks around the World, but I think today\u2019s walk has to be the most dramatically beautiful for me.\u00a0 Our pictures cannot possibly record the wonderful views we have seen today, it\u2019s just all so \u2026\u2026.big!\u00a0 And the fact that we are having perfect class=\"wp-caption-text\">The east side of the Eiger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The walk down was steep and slow; Rodney was a bit sore from yesterday\u2019s jog\u2026..\u00a0 In fact, it was quite a relief when we finally reached the gondola for the trip back down to Grindelwald.\u00a0 En route we managed to spot the window\/ hole in one wall of the Eiger; you could see it change from blue to white as a cloud passed behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_867\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-867\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view down to Grindelwald<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We could have caught the free bus, back to the campsite, but decided instead to wander through the churchyard and take a peek at the church.\u00a0 For the first time ever, we were blown away by a churchyard!\u00a0 Every grave is covered in flowers and the whole area looks more like a garden than a graveyard; with the views of the glacier and mountains behind, the effect is spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-869\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The churchyard in Grindelwald<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After drifting on down to the supermarket and then trudging further down-hill to the campsite, we were hot, thirsty and foot weary; oh, and Rodney wants to add thigh weary.\u00a0 Now we\u2019re keen to look through our photos and relive the day while stretched out in Eileen for the evening.<\/p>\n<p>And the day
