{"id":907,"date":"2012-07-14T07:34:32","date_gmt":"2012-07-14T06:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/?p=907"},"modified":"2025-11-23T06:20:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T06:20:47","slug":"not-a-drop-passed-our-lips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/2012\/07\/14\/not-a-drop-passed-our-lips\/","title":{"rendered":"Not A Drop Passed Our Lips."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we woke up this morning we both still felt fat.\u00a0 Last night&#8217;s fabulous dinner was the biggest we have eaten while we have been travelling, but Max insisted we meet him in their beautiful, new breakfast room.\u00a0 Thankfully it\u2019s a buffet service, so we only ate a couple of mouthfuls and then embarked on a tour of the hotel.\u00a0 It was amazing to hear how they have changed and extended so much since Grandma started the business, we had not realised the place was so extensive.\u00a0 As well as the indoor and outdoor pools and spa, there is a business lounge, conference rooms, a bowling alley, a function room, the restaurant, the breakfast room, a winstub which has lovely old photos of his grandma and great grandparents, a bar, a pool bar, a cigar room, a rooster room full of paintings and drawings and sculptures of roosters (his Dad loves them&#8230;.it&#8217;s a French thing perhaps) and 62 bedrooms.\u00a0 It is a maze, going on and on, and round and round; we loved it all.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_913\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-913\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-913\" title=\"P1080184 (640x427)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427-96x64.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.petersphotogallery.com\/rodneyandlaura\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/P1080184-640x427.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Corner of the garden at Le Parc, Obernai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We also walked through the kitchens which were in full swing preparing for a function and lunchtime, it\u2019s not an area that one usually gets to see, so it was marvellous to see behind the scenes. If anyone is considering a holiday in the Alsace, which we thoroughly recommend, then we would very highly recommend staying here at The Parc Hotel; it\u2019s gorgeous.\u00a0 <a id=\"caption-attachment-914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Le Parc, Obernai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We finally let Max get on with some work and we drove off, in his car again, south this time, down the motorway to Riquewihr.\u00a0 This is a Michelin\u00a0three star and another \u2018Les Plus Beaux\u2019 village; it is a bit touristy, but it\u2019s so lovely and we enjoyed ambling around taking id=\"caption-attachment-910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cobbled streets and pavements in Riquewihr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After that we drove back north to visit the Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg which sits high up on a hill above the Alsace Wine Route Villages.\u00a0 It\u2019s a wonderful old castle which has switched between being owned by the Germans and the French.\u00a0 After being a ruin for many years, it was given to the German Emperor and restored between 1900 and 1908, but was then handed back to France under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.\u00a0 This is such an interesting area with this constant moving between French and German ownership, but it still feels thoroughly Germanic to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_911\" id=\"caption-attachment-911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To get back to Obernai we decided to continue on The Wine Route through endless, pretty, Alsatian villages until Rodney got too tired to take any more bendy roads and narrow cobbled streets.\u00a0 We passed so many cellar doors for, maybe more than a hundred, vineyards.\u00a0 Within one tiny village we counted\u00a0seventeen vineyards\u00a0on the road through; I don\u2019t know how many more there may have been on the side roads.\u00a0 Every village is surrounded by vineyards and we are trying to comprehend how they can sell so much wine.\u00a0 Unfortunately, with Rodney driving, and me unable to have more than half a glass before gaining wobbly boots, not a drop passed our lips\u2026..!\u00a0 However, as it is France\u2019s National day (known to some of us as Bastille Day, but not to the French), we intend to wander down in to Obernai this evening for a drink and perhaps watch some fireworks.\u00a0 This seems like quite an appropriate way to end our visit to our only French friend Maxime in his home town.\u00a0 No doubt we will catch up with him
